Fish Identification Workshop

WildResearch and Byrne Creek Streamkeepers are pleased to co-host a Freshwater Fish Identification Workshop for their members on September 13, 2015.

This workshop geared toward young biologists and groups that sample fish for scientific purposes. The workshop includes a morning classroom session with guest speaker, Jim Roberts (Senior Fisheries Biologist at Hemmera), and will cover common fish sampling techniques and procedures, and the identification of fish species commonly found in the lower mainland. In the afternoon, we will head to Byrne Creek Park for a hands-on training session outdoors (weather permitting).

WildResearch has a solution! Following the success of our 2013, “Resume Writing Workshop for Biologists” we will be hosting another workshop of this kind on February 26 2015. The workshop will give insights and advice from four professional biologists from the federal government (Environment Canada), non-profit (Ducks Unlimited), and private sector (SNC-Lavalin and ERM Rescan) on:

 

    • the top “Do’s and Don’ts” of resume writing;
    • insights into the skills, training/certifications, and qualifications employers look for when hiring for their sector/organization; and
    • critiquing resumes provided in advance by workshop participants to provide constructive feedback on their resumes.

2014-2015 Bird ID Field Trips

IMG_9152(1200x800)Join WildResearch for our annual Bird Identification Field Trips at a variety of parks across the Metro Vancouver area!

Learn to identify a wide variety of wintering birds, including:

  • Waterfowl
  • Loons
  • Gulls
  • Shorebirds
  • Raptors
  • Sparrows

Dates

  • December 14, 2014  — Stanley Park (Lost Lagoon)
  • January 18, 2015 — Lighthouse Park
  • February 15, 2015 — John Henry Park (Trout Lake)
  • March 22, 2015 — Reifel Bird Sanctuary

Duration of meetings will be about 2-3 hours.

Field trips are open to all current WildResearch members.

Iona Dune Grass Restoration

Did you know that Iona Beach Regional Park, Richmond BC, is home to a dune grass ecosystem, one of the rarest ecosystem types in the Lower Mainland? WildResearch and Metro Vancouver are hosting a restoration work party this spring and we need your help to remove invasive plants that have begun encroaching on the restored dune grass we planted last fall!

Please join us for this event:

  • Date : Sunday March 16, 2014
  • Time : 10:00am – 1:00pm
  • Meeting Location: parking lot at Iona Beach Regional Park
  • Bring: Gardening gloves
